Local Resources

Christian Light Publications a local publishing company that offer a complete, nationally-acclaimed K-12 curriculum (they offer individual and group tours of their facility by the way!).  Their Chicago Avenue bookstore is our only official homeschool store.  You will find conservative Christian books and activity books for children and adults.  Store hours are Mon. – Fri. 8:30 – 5.  They also offer occasional workshops and classes to encourage homeschool families.  Check out their website for more info or our annual events page.

The Teacher’s Aide — a teacher store located next to the Food Lion at Carlton Street in Harrisonburg, is more geared towards public schools and Sunday schools, but is a good source for manipulatives and some harder to find teaching tools for homeschoolers.  I’ve purchased posters in pairs in order to make them interactive.  For example, I cut up a second identical poster of the days of the week, attaching velcro buttons on the back of each day so that my younger children can match them to the appropriate velcro piece that I attached on the primary poster.  They also provide a laminating service at a reasonable cost. Booksavers of Virginia is located inside the Gift and Thrift Store on Mt. Clinton Pike.  As far as thrift stores go, this one is the tops!  Well organized, they even have their books listed online!!!  You can even order online and they will ship to you!  A great place to find some great educational/ living books, but also my favorite place to donate.  Of course, don’t forget to spill over into the main part of the store where I often find great games and puzzles as well!                   Open 9:30-5, Mon-Sat.

Massanutten Regional Library , a network of 9 libraries and a bookmobile, is an obvious resource for books, movies and music.  I’m a big fan of using their online tool to search for, reserve and even renew materials I need for the upcoming weeks.  They’ll simply call me when the materials are gathered.  You’ll need a pin number along with your library card to access this service.

Green Valley Book Fair has over 500,000 new books at 60%-90% off retail!  Those willing to sift through all the “pap” will find some great treasures at great prices!  Open only during scheduled dates – about 6  2-week blocks each year — from 9am to 7pm.  1-800-385-0099.  Located between Harrisonburg and Staunton near exit 240.   Check out their website for dates.
