I am moving out of the homeschool world this year, having accepted a job as a 4th grade teacher at a small, local Christian school. I will no longer be able to maintain this site. If you have found this site helpful or have ideas to make it even better, contact me, and we’ll talk about how you can take it over! Otherwise, I’ll close it down this summer.

Dear CSG Current & Prospective Families,

Registration for Classical Support Group’s Grammar Level (K-6^th grade) 2011-2012 School Year is now open. (Please e-mail Lisa for registration and informational documents):

CSG registration fee is $50 per child if postmarked by June 1. Registrations postmarked after June 1 are $100 per child. Registrations postmarked after July 1 are $150.

Additional tuition or supply fees may apply to certain classes. For example, the Institute for Excellence in Writing class will be taught by Denise Kelley, an IEW Accomplished Instructor and homeschooling Mom who has graduated all her children. Cost is $100 per student for the year. Also, Dorothy Scheel will be teaching art for the upper grammar students (9-12 year olds) this year. Cost is $75 per student.

As you are registering your children, please consider where you (the parent) would like to serve. The success of our co-op is dependent upon the parents giving generously of their time and talents in teaching the classes. Note your preferences for teaching/helping on the Student and Parent Sign-Up Sheet (attached above).

Free Technology seminar TONIGHT!

Cornerstone Christian School has invited Brad Huddleston to present the Dark Side of Technology seminar for parents and grandparents (no children or teens please) on Friday, April 15, 2011 at 7:00 pm in the school gymnasium. The meeting is open to the public and admission is free. A freewill offering will be received. Cornerstone Christian School is located on Route 11 north of Harrisonburg on Cornerstone Lane.

Meeting tonight re: satellite highschool hybrid

Here is an e-mail from Mary Ann Heerschap [via Cathy Brent] regarding a satellite Christian high school initiative starting in the Harrisonburg area.

“I will be having a meeting for a new hybrid school in Harrisonburg – Mon. 3/28 at 6:30 at the Massanutten Regional Library. This is also a satellite school but meeting 2 days per week with an optional third day. I realize this will not work for everyone, but the satellite school is accredited and has 28 years experience. Their moral standards are rock solid. Having all classes blocked on a few days instead of a random college schedule is appealing to many families. One such hybrid school now has 3 campuses in the Atlanta area.”

I’m definitely hoping to see all of you at the Annual Used Curriculum Sale this Saturday at Covenant Presbyterian Church from 9-1. Click on the Curriculum Sale to get all the info about how to sell stuff. Otherwise, just show up with plenty of cash.

You’ll still have plenty of time to take in the homeschool day at the New Market Battlefield (from 10am to 4pm). There will be lots of hands-on learning activities for you and your kids. This is an HEAV event, and registration is required. Not sure if there is still room, but you can check out their website here.

Looking for a Classical Christian Co-op for your Middle & High School Students?

This fall Classical Support Group (CSG), a local homeschool cooperative serving grammar age students (pre K-6^th grade), is expanding to include Dialectic/Rhetoric (D/R) age students (7^th– 10^th grade or higher at families’ discretion) . CSG assists parents in equipping their children with a Biblical worldview and the classical “tools of learning.”

Curriculum Overview: (Links are provided so you can easily peruse the web sites to review these curricula.) All classes are a la carte and mostly parent-taught.

Tapestry of Grace for the humanities, primarily history, literature and geography. Students cycle through world history every four years, with all ages (grammar, dialectic and rhetoric) studying the same timeline of history each week, each at their own learning level. *IEW and Art classes are tuition-based.

Tuition for IEW is $100 per student for the year (all levels) Classes are 1- 1 ½ hours.

Classes are 1 hour.

CSG seeks to support homeschooling families and provide weekly accountability as they fulfill their role in educating their children. For most classes parent teachers, using their God-given gifts and talents, teach students in a variety of challenging academic topics. Our goal is that the combination of a God-centered and classical education will be used to build in students a solid academic foundation within a distinctly Christian worldview.

HSDLA is hosting a one-day workshop at Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, VA on March 12 from 8:15 to 4:30 pm. Teaching at Home: Basics and Beyond for Struggling Learners and Toddlers to Tweens is a two-track conference each with four general sessions, twelve workshops and Q&A sessions which feature Vicki Bentley, Faith Berens, Dianne Craft and Betty Statnick and others. Topics include time management, identifying learning glitches, apprenticeship, multi-level teaching, burnout, organization, curriculum, auditory processing dysfunctions, ADD, ASD, and more! FYI, In case you are interested, Six Flags Great America has a program
called “Read to Succeed” where you (as homeschoolers) can get a free
admission ticket for you (as teacher) and any of your kids in grades K-6 who
read six hours or more between now & the end of February. Just go to
http://readtosucceed.discoveryeducation.com/ and sign up but you have to
register by January 25 which is today!!. I’m not sure if that means you
have to do it today or if you still can do it tomorrow too.
